Cooling System
On a typical dirt bike, water is pumped around the cylinder to gather heat and transfer it to a separate radiator. It's a similar system to a car in many respects and will rely on the forward motion in order to cool the water sufficiently.
Avoiding the Overheat
Yet there is often room for improvement here, and you should take a much closer look at the components involved. If you intend to spend a lot of time navigating some tricky and tortuous trails, you will need to make sure that the bike does not overheat and leave you stranded.
Upgrading Your Hoses
Begin by looking at the hoses that connect the system together. While these are made from reinforced rubber and will handle the job, you may benefit from upgrading to a silicon product instead. Often, these have a larger internal diameter, and the hoses themselves are of better quality. The individual bends will have been formed using more sophisticated machinery, and they will typically come with stainless clips as well. Water will now be able to flow more effectively through the system, and each hose will be better able to deal with temperature, pressure and rough terrain.
Fitting a Fan
If you open the bonnet on your car or truck, you will see a fan in front of the radiator. This is designed to keep things cool when the vehicle is stopped at a traffic light while the hot engine is still running. Most dirt bikes do not come with a fan as standard, but you should look at fitting one in any case. It is particularly important if you do spend long periods of time moving slowly through a muddy or rutted section, as you cannot build up any flow of air. The fan will then come on and will help to cool down the fluid until you can get moving again and restore normal service.
